Six Continents
Now presented on the esplanade in front of the Musée d'Orsay,
the Six Continents were designed for the l'Exposition universlle de 1878 at the palais du Trocadèro (Trocadèro palace), and had been lying in a public rubbish dump in Nantes since 1963. The Musée d'Orsay secured them in exchange for a painting by Sisley for the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes.
From left to right:
Alexandre Schœnewerk's I'Europe (Europe), Alexandre Falguière's I'Asie (Asia), Eugène Delaplanche's I'Afriqure (Africa), Ernest Eugène Hiolle's I' Amérique du Nord (North America), Aimé Millet's Amérique du Sud (South America), and Mathurin Moreau's I'Océanie (Oceania, or Australia)
